Get Involved
Sustainability at Howard is built by its people. Whether you're a student, faculty member, staff, or community partner - there's a role for you. Every action counts, and the more of us who participate, the stronger our impact becomes.
Take the BisonGREEN Pledge
As a member of the Howard University community, I pledge to advance sustainability through stewardship, scholarship, research, innovation, and service.
I commit to:
Growing Communities by working together to create healthier, stronger, and more resilient campus and neighborhood areas we call home.
Restoring Environments by protecting natural resources and caring for the spaces we share.
Encouraging Stewardship by learning continuously, sharing knowledge, and inspiring sustainable action.
Empowering Innovation by advancing research, embracing creativity, and developing solutions that build a more resilient future.
Advancing a Net-Zero Future by making responsible choices that reduce our environmental impact.
Together, I honor Howard's legacy while building a healthier, greener campus and neighboring communities for generations to come.
Together, We Are Building a Sustainable Howard for Generations to Come

For Faculty & Staff
Share Your Data BisonGreen needs building energy data, waste metrics, water usage, transportation surveys, and course information to pursue our STARS sustainability rating. If you manage or have access to any campus operational data, we need your partnership.
Integrate Sustainability into Your Courses The STARS framework rewards institutions where sustainability is embedded across the curriculum - not just in environmental science. Contact us to discuss how sustainability connects to your discipline.
Serve on the Sustainability Council The Council meets quarterly to set policy, review progress, and advise on institutional sustainability strategy. Faculty and staff representatives are essential.
Connect Your Research Howard has world-class researchers in climate science, environmental engineering, urban ecology, public health, and environmental justice. If your work intersects with campus sustainability, let us connect it to BisonGreen initiatives.
Mentor Student Projects Capstone projects, independent studies, and service-learning courses aligned with BisonGreen initiatives provide students hands-on impact while advancing our goals.
For Community Partners
Howard University sits in Wards 1 and 4 of Washington, DC. Our sustainability work extends beyond campus boundaries - we are building relationships with DC government agencies, neighborhood organizations, food security networks, and environmental nonprofits. If your organization works in stormwater management, food justice, waste reduction, urban forestry, sustainable transportation, or climate resilience in DC, we want to hear from you. Contact sustainability@howard.edu to explore partnership.
